The PLaCE Research Centre is running two workshops;

'Catchment' workshop is intended to contribute to our developing working relationship with both Bristol City Council and with members of the international Mapping Spectral Traces Network with a particular interest in water issues and bio-regions and to launch a new international network.

PlaCE/Mapping Spectral Traces workshop is intended to develop and broaden the ongoing conversation between PLaCE/LAND2 and members of the international Mapping Spectral Traces network of artists, landscape designers, performers and academics working in the emergent fields of Memory and Landscape Studies.

Hello all,

As Providence would have it our university union has called a major strike across the FE and HE sectors for March 24th “to defend education and defend jobs, pensions and pay”. This places me in a difficult situation as a long-standing union member with friends being made redundant. I am absolutely behind the strike and would normally join the picket line at Bower Ashton – not least because I am aware that the union view is that the purpose of the strike is to cause maximum disruption (which, in this case, would include the cancelation of the workshop).
However, as the host of an international workshop with attendees flying in from all around the world to be with us (in some cases at considerable personal cost), I feel I have to continue with the workshop as planned, even if this involves crossing the picket line. Mel, Victoria and I have looked for a way to avoid this situation by using an alternative venue but we simply cannot meet either the additional cost or the logistical problems such a change of venue would involve.
I have discussed the situation with our site union representative today and have asked him to alert the university branch to our dilemma. I will also copy this letter to him.
Obviously you will each want to make your own choice as to whether you cross the picket line and join us on the 24th or not. However, if you are on the current attendee list and do not intend to join us please let Mel and myself know so we can make any necessary adjustments to the programme.

Best wishes to all
Iain
